Maintaining a healthy oral microbiome is crucial for both oral and overall health. This complex community of microorganisms in the mouth plays a significant role in preventing various chronic diseases. A balanced oral microbiome can remineralize teeth, balance pH levels, protect against pathogens, and more.

The Role of the Oral Microbiome

  1. First Path for Digestion: The oral microbiome initiates the digestive process. Beneficial bacteria in the mouth help break down food particles and begin the digestion of carbohydrates through enzymes in saliva, making nutrients more accessible for absorption further along the digestive tract. Saliva also helps form the food into a bolus, making it easier to swallow and further digest in the stomach and intestines.

  2. Remineralization of Teeth: The bacteria in the oral microbiome transport ionic minerals from saliva to the tooth surface, aiding in the natural remineralization process, which helps maintain strong and healthy teeth.

  3. Balancing pH Levels: A healthy oral microbiome helps maintain a pH level that supports microbial balance and inhibits the growth of harmful bacteria.

  4. Protection Against Pathogens: The biofilm formed by beneficial bacteria acts as a protective barrier, preventing harmful bacteria from entering the bloodstream and causing systemic infections. This barrier is the first line of defense against pathogens that can lead to systemic diseases.

  5. Oxygenation and Waste Elimination: Beneficial bacteria carry oxygen to the gums and soft tissues and eliminate free radicals and other waste products, promoting overall oral health and reducing inflammation.

Symbiotic Relationship Between Oral and Systemic Health

Systemic health issues can lead to oral health problems and vice versa. An imbalance in the oral microbiome can contribute to systemic inflammation and disease, while systemic issues like diabetes can exacerbate oral health problems. For instance, diabetes can promote an overabundance of harmful bacteria in the mouth, leading to periodontal disease, which in turn can worsen diabetes by increasing blood sugar levels.

Airway issues can create a sympathetic nervous system state, increasing systemic stress and contributing to gingival inflammation and other chronic disease issues. Proper management of airway health is crucial for maintaining a healthy oral microbiome and overall systemic health.

Importance of pH 6.4 in Oral Health

The pH level of 6.4 is not considered neutral by traditional dental professionals but is essential in the premise of Reams Biological Theory of Ionization (RBTI). RBTI suggests that maintaining a pH of 6.4 in the saliva and urine ensures that the nutrients are available for uptake by the teeth, making them inherently stronger and more resilient to decay. This pH level supports the ideal balance of beneficial bacteria that protect the teeth and gums from pathogenic microorganisms. When the body's internal environment is balanced at this pH, it promotes overall health and enhances the body's ability to absorb and utilize nutrients effectively.

Impact of Breathing Habits on Oral Health

Mouth breathing can significantly disrupt the oral microbiome, leading to dysbiosis. Proper breathing habits, such as nasal breathing, help maintain moisture and pH balance in the mouth, supporting a healthy microbial environment. Addressing improper breathing habits is essential for maintaining a healthy oral microbiome.

Influences on the Oral Microbiome

  1. Stress Levels: Chronic stress can alter the composition of the oral microbiome, leading to an imbalance. Stress affects the body's immune response and can create an environment conducive to the growth of harmful bacteria. Stress-induced changes in the microbiome can exacerbate inflammation and periodontal disease. Stress can come from various sources, not just psychological stressors, but also physical and environmental factors.

  2. Food Choices and Diet: Diets high in sugars and processed foods promote the growth of pathogenic bacteria, while diets rich in whole foods, fruits, and vegetables support a healthy microbiome. Consuming nutrient-dense foods and avoiding processed foods can help maintain a balanced microbiome. Incorporating spore-based probiotics, soil-based organisms (SBOs), and humic and fulvic acids can further support gut and oral health.

  3. Environment: Exposure to pollutants and chemicals in the environment can negatively impact the oral microbiome. Environmental toxins can disrupt the microbial balance and contribute to oral and systemic diseases. Supporting the microbiome by strengthening the gut barrier and reducing the impact of environmental toxins is essential.

  4. Sleep: Poor sleep quality and lack of sleep can weaken the immune system, making it easier for harmful bacteria to flourish in the mouth. Sleep is crucial for maintaining a healthy immune response and microbial balance.

  5. Frequency (Electromagnetic Fields): Exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMFs) from devices such as cell phones and Wi-Fi may influence the microbiome by disrupting microbial communication and balance. There is ongoing research into how EMFs affect microbial health, highlighting the need for further investigation.

Supporting the Ecosystem

Instead of focusing solely on killing pathogens, we should support the natural balance of the oral microbiome. This approach aligns with nature's intention of creating harmony within the body. By maintaining a balanced oral microbiome, we can prevent diseases and promote overall health.

  1. Microbiome-Supportive Products: Use toothpaste and mouthwashes that support the natural balance of the oral microbiome. Products containing prebiotics can nourish beneficial bacteria without disrupting the microbiome.

  2. Minimize Use of Antimicrobials and Essential Oils: While oil pulling and essential oils can be beneficial for resolving specific issues, their overuse can disrupt the balance of the oral microbiome. These practices should be used sparingly and not as daily routines.

  3. Diet and Lifestyle Choices: Consuming a nutrient-dense diet rich in vegetables, fruits, and foods high in prebiotics, probiotics, and postbiotics can support a healthy oral microbiome. Avoiding excessive sugar and acidic foods can prevent the growth of harmful bacteria. Including soil-based microbes, humic, and fulvic acids in your diet can also support a balanced microbiome. Additionally, spending time in nature, gardening, and avoiding over-sanitization are recommended to enhance microbiome diversity. Stress management and adequate sleep are essential for maintaining a balanced oral microbiome.

  4. Hydration via Electrolytes and Hydrating Foods: Proper hydration is crucial for maintaining saliva production and pH balance. Instead of focusing solely on water consumption, it is essential to include electrolytes and hydrating foods like fruits and vegetables in the diet to support optimal hydration and oral health.

  5. Avoid Over-Sanitizing: Overuse of antimicrobial products can disrupt the natural balance of the oral microbiome. It's important to maintain good hygiene while allowing the beneficial bacteria to thrive.

  6. Regular Physical Activity: Exercise improves circulation, which can help maintain a healthy oral environment. Good circulation ensures that nutrients and oxygen are effectively transported to all parts of the body, including the gums.

  7. Mindfulness and Stress Reduction: Practices such as meditation and yoga can reduce nervous system issues, which in turn can prevent systemic stress and related gingival inflammation, maintaining a healthy balance in the oral microbiome.

By focusing on the health of the oral microbiome, we can enhance our overall well-being and address the root causes of many chronic diseases. Embrace the journey to optimal health by prioritizing your oral microbiome through mindful dietary choices, reducing toxin exposure, managing stress, and ensuring adequate sleep. This holistic approach can help restore and maintain a healthy balance, paving the way for a healthier, happier you.
