“I do everything right, so why am I still tired?” I understand the frustration behind that question. You are paying attention to food, taking care of your teeth and making time for sleep. Maybe your mouth stays closed at night and you rarely remember waking. From what you can see, the basics are covered. Yet the morning arrives and you do not feel restored, or your digestion and jaw are still uncomfortable. I would want to know why too.

Last Sunday, we looked at the work the body does to complete a protective response. Sometimes there is an ongoing reason for that response, and sometimes the systems coordinating recovery need support. Much of this coordination happens without our conscious direction. We cannot decide to produce more saliva, improve intestinal movement or organize our sleep stages in the way we decide what to make for dinner. The nervous system is receiving information and sending instructions throughout the day and night, influenced by both our surroundings and what is happening inside us.

Acetylcholine is one of its chemical messengers, with roles in sleep, muscle activity, digestion and pathways involved in regulating inflammation. I find that connection useful because these concerns are so often discussed separately. Someone gets advice for constipation, different advice for poor sleep and another explanation for jaw tension. There may be different causes, but there is also a person whose systems are working together. Acetylcholine is one example of that shared communication. Its effects depend on where it acts, so it is not simply a relaxation chemical or something we should assume we need more of.

The vitamin D and B vitamin relationships I draw from include a model connecting biochemical support with sleep regulation. This is why I am interested in understanding the purpose of a nutrient before recommending it. A person may need help with the pathways supporting function, rather than another reminder to relax. And they may need an ongoing physical problem addressed. Feeling emotionally calm does not tell us whether pain, breathing difficulty or another demand is still asking the nervous system to respond.

“My mouth is closed” tells us about the lips, but not how freely air moves behind the tongue.

“I slept eight hours” tells us about time, but not everything about the quality of those hours.

Neither observation is wrong. We may simply have asked it to answer more than it can. If you have been using those signs to reassure yourself while still waking tired, it is worth bringing the tiredness into the conversation too. Your experience gives us information that a checklist can miss.

There is also the effort we carry through an ordinary day. Some people notice their teeth pressed together while concentrating, or their shoulders lifted while answering messages. Being busy can feel so familiar that we do not recognize how much tension comes with it.

I am interested in what keeps that pattern going, whether it is discomfort, urgency or the expectation that we should always be available. In Metal season, the question of what we are holding can include the roles and obligations we have grown accustomed to, along with the physical conditions that deserve care.

The current Venus in retrograde has symbolism of reviewing worth and relationships gives me another way to reflect on those expectations. Sometimes we keep giving because we enjoy it; sometimes we are afraid of disappointing someone. We can be honest about that without blaming every physical symptom on an emotion. The body and our life history both deserve attention.

If you feel you are doing everything right, give yourself credit for the care you have offered. Then look at where you are benefiting and where you remain uncomfortable. You may not need a more demanding routine. You may need a better understanding of what is still asking your body to work, and what would help it recover. That is a reasonable place to begin, without deciding that either you or your body has failed.

Next we’ll turn toward what nourishes us, including where the body finds the resources to rebuild and why helpful support can look different for each of us. Until then, be kind to yourself when the answers are not clear, and seek support from someone who takes time to understand you.
